B Grade Match Pleasant Valley Beats St. Joseph’s In the Temuka Town and Country Tennis Association’s B grade shield competition, Pleasant Valley Beat St. Joseph’s by 10 sets to six at St. Joseph’s on Saturday. Results (St. Joseph’s names first): Women's singles: Mrs W. J. Tozer lost to Miss E. Padgett 0-6, Miss G. Spillane beat Miss M. Webb 6-4, Miss L. Spillane beat Miss M. Caskey 6-5, Miss M. Gallen lost to Miss B. Burrows 2-6. Men’s singles: F. Ives lost to E. Webb 4- J. Spillane beat R. Worner 6-1, J. Healey lost to C. Burrows 2-6, P. Spillane lost to H. Worner 1-6. Women’s doubles: Mrs Tozer and Miss G. Spillane lost to Misses Padgett and Webb 6-1, Misses L. Spillane and Gallen lost to Misses Caskey and Burrows. Men’s doubles: Ives and J. Spillane beat Webb and R. Worner 6-4, Healy and P. Spillane beat Burrows and H. Worner 6-5. Mixed doubles: Mrs Tozer and J. Spillane lost to Miss Padgett and Webb 5- Miss G. Spillane and Ives lost to Miss Webb and R. Worner 5-6, Miss L. Spillane and P. Spillane lost to Miss Caskey and Burrows 4-6, Miss Gallen and Healey beat Miss Burrows and H. Worner 6-2.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE There was a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Temuka Women’s Institute which was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. Mrs W. L. Harrison presided. A comprehensive report on the halfyearly council meeting at Pleasant Point was given by Mrs Wilson. The making of soft toys was demonstrated by Mrs Greenfield, who later sold the patterns, the proceeds being given to the Institute funds. It was decided to convey the best wishes of the Institute to Mrs A. G. Brown, a Federation member, who is leaving the district. Miss Barnard was elected a member. Results of the monthly competitions were: Biscuits, Mrs Brookland 1; tea cosy, Mrs Brookland 1. CARD AFTERNOON’’ To close a successful year, a card afternoon, organised by members of the Handcraft Circle, was held in the Fire Brigade rooms. The winners at euchre were Mesdames B. Levens and T. Scott. A competition was won by Mrs A. Fletcher. Mrs F. M. Martin thanked members and visitors for their attendance and expressed a hone that they had all spent a pleasant afternoon. “COME ON, GEORGE” George Formby’s current mirthquake, ‘‘Come On George,’’ which comes to the Elite Theatre, Temuka, to-day, is a riotous horse-racing comedy, the picture he has always wanted to make since he left .he racing stables to become a screen, stage and radio star. Film reviewers unanimously acclaim it his best and funniest film . . . and George admits he never enjoyed making a film so much as he did “Come On. Gcoree.”
