CRICKET FOURTH SERIES

Senior Competition Bowlers’ Day Out The South Canterbury Cricket Association’s senior competition on Saturday was noteworthy for the splendid performance of B. Roddick, who, in the Star v. Fairview match at Timaru Park, carried his bat for 106. The Fairview batsmen collapsed, seven being dismissed without scoring, Hahn taking six wickets for 13 runs. Bowling for Old Boys A, Kane dismissed seven Old Boys B batsmen for no runs. Cunninghame for West End captured seven wickets for 15 runs in the match at Temuka. The teams securing wins were Old Boys B, Timaru, Temuka and Star.

CENTURY TO RODDICK

A brilliant unbeaten century by Roddick and a complete collapse by the Fairview team in which seven batsmen registered “ducks” gave Star a spectacular win by 168 runs to 23 in a match played at Timaru Park. With two wickets down for six runs. Star’s innings opened inauspiciously, but Button (40) and Roddick settled down Co a fine partnership which produced 116 runs. Hahn (16) then joined Roddick to add a further 46 runs before the innings was declared closed. Roddick went for the bowling from the start. His second scoring stroke was a four and his third a six, and he scored, in all. four sixes—the last putting his century on the board—and eight fours. The Fairview innings was a sad procession and the first four were dismissed before

the scoring opened. V. Hahn and R. Taylor divided the wickets between them and recorded flattering averages. Scores: STAR Button, cR. Stevens, b Rogers .. 40 Brooker, b W. KANE DOES “ HAT TRICK ” On a tricky wicket at Fraser Park Old Boys B beat Old Boys A by 16 runs in a match which was noteworthy for splendid bowling averages. Old Boys B went in first and in spite of the fact that J. Kane, who did the “hat trick,” took seven wickets for no runs, Butterfield made a good stand for 26 and the innings closed with 52 on the board. Butterfield and Grant faced the bowling of Mclnnes and Earwaker, but Grant had only broken his duck when he was caught off Earwaker. Souter reached nine and was replaced by Hay who was run out with six to his redit, the score board reading 29 for three With 50 runs up Butterfield fell a victim to Kane who then dismissed six batsmen in succession, McClelland being the only one to break his duck Warsaw carried his bat for three. The Old Boys A batsmen also found that the wicket favoured the bowlers, Butterfield who took seven for 12, and Budd, two for four, playing havoc in their ranks. Gifford was run out at three and Williams (16) was the only double figure scorer, the side being dismissed for 36. The four last men all went out leg before to Butterfield Mahan carried his bat for five.
