SOUTH END CLUB At the third annual meeting of the South End Swimming Club, the election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr F. Chlttock; president, Mr J. Rodgers; vice-presidents, Messrs W. G. Tweedy, M. Richards, A. Toneycliffe and F. Hanson; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr C. E. Brunsden; assistant secretary, Mr A. Direen; handicap-starters, Messr R. E. Peagram and W. Foster; delegates to centre, Messrs F. Chlttock and O. Sewell; auditor, Mr V. Keay. The balance-sheet, showing a very satisfactory position, was approved. The annual report was read and adopted. Mention was made of the success members had achieved in inter-club events during last season. A junior member, Desmond O'Rourke, had won the Speechly Mile harbour race in record time and gained third place with fastest time in the 880yds. At the 1940 South Canterbury championship meeting the following succeses had been gained: Junior boys’ dive, A. Page 1, N. Smith 2; juniorboys’ 100 yards freestyle, Desmond O’Rourke; women’s breaststroke 75 yards, Miss A. Cunninghame 2; men’s freestyle 220 yards, G. Griffiths 2; Intermediate girls’ dive, A. Cunninghame 2. The inter-club carnival sponsored by the club had been a success and resulted in a profit of more than £3. It was decided to award trophy orders to the winners of the aggregate points races in addition to the present cups. Mr R. G. Hayward has given a gold medal to the club and this is to be awarded to the winner of an open diving competition. The season was officially opened on Wednesday evening b.y the president, Mr J. Rodgers. The races resulted as follows: — Junior girls 33 1-3 yards—Betty Faith 1, Catherine Cunninghame 2. Times 28secs. Junior boys’ 33 1-3 yards—C. Knox 1, E. McConnochie 2, C. Day and A. Williams equal 3. Breaststroke 25 yards—E. McConnochie 1, C. Knox 2, W. Fraser and A. Williams equal 3. Intermediate boys’ 50 yards—D. O’Rourke 1, W. Fraser 2, R. Pettigrew 3 Junior boys’ dive—A. Williams 1, D. Adams 2, Duffell 3.
