WEATHER SOUTH CANTERBURY FORECAST
UNSETTLED (Special to "T'.ie Timaru Herald") WELLINGTON, November 19 Winds—South-westerly winds predominating and becoming strong at times. Weather—Mainly fair but changeable with scattered showers and fair intervals; temperatures cool. Seas—Rough offshore. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation Pressure is high to the west and low to the east and south. A series of depressions of the westerly type is moving across the Dominion from the south-west. Forecast Winds—Fresh to strong southwesterly to westerly predominating but tending- north-westerly at times east of the ranges. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Moderate inshore on the East Coast, rough elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong west to south-west winds and rough seas but wind and sea later decreasing gradually. Weather—Squally and changeable almost generally; showers in most districts but only scattered east of the ranges; cool temperatures with some light frosts inland in the South Island. TIMARU RECORDS Sun rose at Timaru to-day 5.18 a.m., sets 7.28 p.m. High water at Timaru to-day 6.50 a.m. and 7.16 p.m.
HEAVY FALL OF RAIN Heavy rain set in at 4 p.m. yesterday after changeable conditions during the morning. Records at Timaru Park yesterday Barometer—29.2. Max. temperature—6o. Min. temp, on grass—39 • Wind—E.2. Frost—Nil. Rainfall—,7lins. Rainfall to date this year—l9.67ins. Rainfall to date last year—l3.slins. Sunshine—2.B hours. Sunshine to date this year—l6BB.lhrs. Sunshine to date last year—l697.9hrs. IN OTHER CENTRES Fairlie: Yesterday was bitterly cold with a wind from the south. In the late afternoon there was hail and rain. Temuka: There was an overcast sky yesterday morning and at mid-day a thunderstorm inland brought 13 points of rain. About 3 p.m. the sun appeared but the sky soon clouded over again. The maximum temperature was 65 degrees and the minimum 47. There was a cold south-west wind. The glass Was steady. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Barometer, 29in, thermometer, maximum 60, minimum 53.5; bright sunshine, 1 hour 12 minutes; wind gauge, miles run in last 24 hours, 55. Yesterday morning was overcast. Heavy rain fell throughout the afternoon. Dunedin: Yesterday was heavily overcast with frequent heavy showers and a gusty south-west breeze. The maximum temperature was 54 degrees. The barometer rose slowly during the latter part of the day to 29.48 inches (998 millibars).
