LAWN TENNIS

SOUTHLAND TEAM The yankee tournament conducted by the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association realised £lB/1/6, which was handed to the funds of the Air Force Queen. At a meeting of the management committee, the chairman (Mr J. S. Satterthwaite) congratulated the members on the success of the tournament and expressed thanks to the donors of trophies and others who had given assistance. The New Zealand Association advised that the New Year dates had been allocated to the Association for the annual tournament. The following officials were appointed: Tournament committee, members of the management committee; referee, Mr W. Warne; vice-presidents, Messrs T. B. Hart and W. H. Staniland; handicapping committee, Messrs J. Smith, D. Morgan, W. A. Lewis, and J. L. Mackay; umpires committee, Messrs F. V. McAteer, R. Armstrong, G. R. Innes-Jones and W. E. Renton. The match committee was recommended to consider the reduction of trophies and report to the next meeting. It was also recommended to the committee that the ranking list be opened for play by the first week in December. Visit of Southland Team The Southland Association wrote advising that a representative team would travel to Timaru on November 25. The following South Canterbury team was selected to take part in the match:—P. Durnlng, V. E. Renton (captain), S. McWhirter, G. R. Innes-Jones. J. L. Mackay; R. Barclay; Mrs W. E. Renton, Mrs N. C. Martin, Misses E. Gawith, B. Sutherland, J. Doyle, and E. Patchett. The Southland Association will be represented by the following: A. T. Baird, S. Lindsay, A. McKay N. Adams, J. Coward and D. Radford; Misses R. Wilson, K. Cutt, L. Barrett, M. Mahoney, Mrs N. Adams and Miss D. Deegan. The Southland team will be accompanied by Mr J. H. B. Scholefield, secretary of the Southland Association and formerly secretary of the Aorangi Tennis Club, Timaru. Arrangements for billeting the members of the visiting team were left in the hands of the secretary.
