NATIONAL SAVINGS GROUP

EMPLOYEES ASKED TO ASSIST Letters seeking the interest of local firms in the National Savings Group have been forwarded this week by the Geraldine Postmaster (Mr F. J. Shearer) to all business houses with more than five employees. Mr Shearer said yesterday that it was hoped to establish a number of these savings groups in Geraldine. The scheme provides for a deduction of a small sum each week from the pay envelope with a view to providing funds for war purposes. The money, which can be contributed at any rate from 1/- per week upwards, is lent to the Government for five years for war purposes. Interest is paid at the rate of 3 per cent. If every person saves 1/- a week it will mean that a sum of four million pounds a year can be saved for war purposes. The loan is payable in 1945 when it should increase spending power and reduce the possibility of a slump. All others wishing to take part in the schmee and not coming under a group would be treated as individual depositors, the postmaster said. GOLF OFFICERS ELECTED Before vacating the chair at the annual meeting of the Geraldine District Golf Club held on Tuesday evening the retiring president (Mr o. J. Bennington) said that with the rising costs to-day the maintenance was high and to carry out the work it was necessary that the subscriptions come in. The excellent state of the greens was due to the spadework of the greens committee in previous years. Mr J. J. McGuigan was elected president and other officers elected were as follows: Vice-presidents, Mr G. N. Feilden and Drs. L. C. Mail and G. W. Curtis; club captain, Mr W. Webb; committee, Messrs C. L.
