“ The Timaru Herald ” October 19, 1880 Magisterial Movements We are glad to hear definitely that the Government have no intention of moving Mr Beetham, R.M., from this district, as was recently reported. Considerable changes in the department are in contemplation, with a view to retrenchment and a better distribution of work: but as Mr Beetham is found emphatically the right man in the right place, he is to remain where he is. Buried Treasure A curious and astounding calculation has been made by an American physician. Dr. Farrar. He estimates • according to the London “Medical Record”) that not less than a half ton iof pure gold, worth half a million of dollars, is annually packed into people’s teeth in the United States. At this rate, all the gold in circulation will be buried in the earth in three hundred years. He also calculates that three millions of artificial teeth are annually supplied, and that only one person in eight has sound teeth. A Parody New Zealand needs no bulwarks, No piers along the steep; Her march is o’er the mountain wave. Her home is on the deep. With pebbles from her native streams She quells the surf below, As it roars on her shores, When the stormy winds do blow! When the rollers rage both loud and long, And the stormy winds do blow! Timaru High Schoo! Mr Buechler, who has been appointed to the second mastership in the High School, has been one of the masters in the Dunedin High School for the last six years, where, in addition to the German, he has taught English classes in the curriculum. He has also held the appointment of Lecturer on German in the Otago University for the past five vears. and Lecturer on French in the Normal Training College. One of his testimonials, dated in 1874, is from Mr H. LeCren, of London, formerly of Timaru, who says, “My son Henry has had private tuition in German, French, Latin, etc, for a year, and that in result thereof he has been received in the establishment of Dr. Hirsch, at Canstatt, with high eulogium upon his teacher.” Mr Buechler is also able to teach drawing and painting in water colours. House for Chief Auckland.—The house built for Rewi by the Government at Kihikihi Is about completed. A large quantity of furniture has been sent up from Auckland for it, and w’orkmen have been detailed to lay the floor-cloths and carpets, etc, and see that the place is properly fitted up as a residence for a chief.
