NO INCIDENTS

U.S. Conscription Figures United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, October 17. Nation-wide reports showed that registration for the nation’s first peacetime military conscription was carried out without even a suggestion of a draft riot, contrasting sharply with 1917. when even in wartime it was necessary in various parts of the country to forcibly quell, demonstrations. Conscription headquarters at Washington, when they closed at 10 pm., estimated that 14,000,000 had registered, which is 2,000,000 below the preliminary estimate. The total is expected to increase by over 1,000,000 when the returns are tabulated from hospitals, colleges, and other institutions where special registrations were permitted. Registrars reported that there was some grumbling due to waiting in the lines, but most of those registering proudly offered their services to their country. New York, despite the polyglot population, had a more tranquil registration than an average election with total registrations estimated at 1,107,000. The District Attorney said that ten conscientious objectors who presented themselves at his office and announced their refusal to register were promptly subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury, otherwise there were no incidents.
