NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN

SOUTH CANTERBURY BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury branch of the National Council of Women the following Societies were represented: Woodbury Institute, South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes, Women Teachers, Timaiu High School Old Girs’ Association, W.C.T.U., St. Mary's Mothers’ Union, W.D.F.U., St. John’s Mother’s Union, and four associate members. Mrs T. E. Holdgate presided. Miss Sullivan, Dominion secretary, wrote stating that remits sent forward by branches must be based on accurate information, and should be accompanied by a brief but adequate explanation. The following remit was sent from head office for urgent consideration:— “That the National Council of Women of New Zealand send out an .-'Dpeal to all women urging them to refrain from offering intoxicating liquor to men of the fighting forces. The women fully realise and share the natural and strong desire to do all that can be done for the men, but they feel very strongly that the present deplorable custom of treating soldiers might be stopped if the women would take a firm stand.” Mrs Holdgate brought before members the special service of intercession to be held on the second Friday of each month which all members of women’s organisations are urged to attend. It was decided to open 10 minutes later in future in order to give members time to attend the intercession service. Mrs Holdgate introduced the speaker for the afternoon, Mr P. W. Rule, and congratulated him on having recently received the architects’ gold medal, an honour which had come to Timaru only once previously. Mr Rule then gave an instructive survey of architecture in different ages, illustrating his talk with Pictures and photographs. On the moton of Mr’ MacDonald, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Rule and a hope was expressed that he would deal further with this fascinating subject at a future meeting.
