A motion of sympathy with Cr. H. J. Mathers in the death of his brother was carried in silence at a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night.
Mr W. D. Young, of the Dunedin branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia, has received advice of his transfer to Wanganui. He will be succeeded by Mr M. N. Doig, of the Palmerston North branch.
The appointment of Mr H. F. Butland, Registrar of the Court of Arbitration, to the position of secretary of the Canterbury Employers’ Association was announced yesterday. Mr Butland, who will start his new duties on October 22, takes the position left vacant by the appointment of Mr D. I. Macdonald as secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association.
Flags at the Timaru shipping offices were flown at half-mast yesterday as a mark of respect to the memory of Captain H. Monro, whose death occurred at St. George’s Hospital, Christchurch, on Sunday Captain Monro, who was in his seventy-ninth year' was the managing director of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Co., Ltd. He was a familiar figure in New Zealand shipping circles for many years.
