FREEZING WORKS
Greater Protection Promised Not a little anxiety has been felt by members of the farming community and others concerning the safety of freezing works in the Dominion, and this anxiety was not relieved to any marked extent by the proposed protective measures outlined recently by the Prime Minister. In view of the presence of an organised body in New Zealand opposed to the war, as evidenced by the fact that every member of the First Division of the General Reserve called up for Territorial training received a subversive pamphlet, the secretary of the Farmers’ Union (Mr A. B. Struthers) yesterday telegraphed to Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., emphasising the inadequacy of the protective measures indicated by the Prime Minister and urging more drastic action. Last night Mr Struthers received a reply from Mr Burnett stating that he had interviewed the Prime Minister, who had promised a tightening up of the measures and the gazetting of fresh regulations.
