GERALDINE ARRANGEMENTS MADE

Shearing Classes To Begin

Primary Production Council Arrangements for the establishment of shearing classes for boys of the agricultural class at the Geraldine District High School have been made by the Geraldine branch of the Primary Production Council. The classes will begin shortly in Mr R. G. Charter’s shed, and Mr G. Tagg of Geraldine I has offered his services as instructor I free of cost. | The chairman (Mr W. S. Crotty) said I that it was hoped that farmers would give an opportunity to learners where possible during the shearing season. |Mr Crotty said the Geraldine branch I would be pleased to give assistance in any problem relating to production or any difficulty in obtaining labour. tn view of possible difficulties arising out of the war, the committee recommended all farmers to save any hay, ensilage or oats for chaffing. A remit "That the Government be asked to push ahead with the provision of cheaper lime for autumn sowing in view of the urgency for increased production,” was carried. A further remit urging that shearers in receipt of old age benefits should not lose any portion of these if they again take up shearing as a part of the war effort, was carried. Those present were: Messrs W. S. Crotty, R. G. Charters, G. R. Wooding, and V. Bowker. BRIDE-TO-BE HONOURED The many friends of Miss Mary Lysaght whose marriage to Mr D. Williams will take place on Monday, entertained Miss Lysaght at a kitchen ; evening held at the residence of Mrs 1 M. Lysaght, Orari, on Thursday evening. Euchre was enjoyed during the | evening the winners being, Miss Vaughn (Kirwee) and Mr W. J. Harris. Consolation prizes were won by Miss U. Allen and Mr E. Worner. Competitions were won by Mrs N. Lyons. Misses Mary Lysaght. Maureen Kerr, Mr P. Leary and the Rev. Father Fogarty. Community singing was lead by Mr F. E. Wilks and items were contributed by Musses M. Rowe, M. Kerr and Messrs P. Leary, F. E. Wilks and J. Gregan. Miss Lysaght was the recipient of many beautiful and useful gifts which i were presented on behalf of the gatheri ing by Father Fogarty. Miss Lysaght suitably replied and Mr A. Lysaght spoke on behalf of his mother. CHANGES IN SCHOOL STAFF Several changes in the staff of the Geraldine District High School are mentioned in the headmaster’s report, received at a meeting of the committee on Thursday evening. Mr McGuigan said Mr J. Williams who was relieving on the staff left in September and Mr R. L. Matthews took up his position as a permanent assistant on October 2. Miss E. King who was a I supernumary since the beginning of the year was transferred to a relieving position in the North Island and her place would not be filled. The roll number in the primary department totalled 249 and there were 84 pupils on the secondary roll. The attendance in the lower classes had been effected to some extent by sickness The offer of Mr C. C. Knight to screen a school benefit picture for funds for the school library was accepted with thanks. Members said that this was not the first time Mr Knight had generously assisted in this manner. GOLF The Geraldine District Golf Club's senior L.G.U. medal was won by Mrs E. P. Bennett and the junior medal by Mrs i E. N. J. Hannah. With a gross score of 69, Mrs J. C. Tempter won the ringer competition and Miss M. Rattray was winner of a handicap ringer. Best cards returned in the final E. P. Bennett 95-17-78, Mrs R. E. Mcround lor the L.G.U. medal were: Mrs Ilwrick 103-22-81, Mrs W. H. Kirk 108-27-81. GIFTS TO FIRE BRIGADE Further gifts received for the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade’s appeal fund total £l5/14/3 and are acknowledged as follows: G.D.C.C. £5, Mrs .1. M. H. Tripp £5, Mr W. A. Because the courts are under repair the Geraldine Plat Tennis Club opening fixed for to-day has been postponed until October 28. A progressive euchre in aid of parcels for soldiers will be held in the Oddfellows hall to-night.
