EWE HOGGETS

A. and P. Competition High Standard Following one of the best spring seasons for many years, the standard of the entries in the ewe hogget competition, which was judged on Thursday, was exceptionally high. The sheep in the first six or seven entries were fine specimens for size, wool and constitution. “On the whole, the competition was a great credit to all the exhibitors,” said the chairman (Mr W. H. Orbell) in reporting to a meeting of the Timaru A. and P. Association yesterday. Even in the lower grades, Mr Orbell added, the standard of the sheep was excellent considering the class of country from which they came The judges. Messrs P. McPherson and R. L. Cliff (Pleasant Point), with Mr J. Cunningham (Pleasant Point) as umpire, gave the placings as follows:

In the first count, Mr F. R. Clarke. Levels, was placed third with 93 points but the placings were varied when it was found that Mr Clarke, through a misunderstanding of the conditions, had failed to show the requisite proportion of his sheep. WINCHESTER EUCHRE SOCIAL There was a good attendance at the fortnightly euchre evening in aid of the school funds, “’he winners were Mesdames W. J. Moore, C. G. McClelland, Messrs C. G. McClelland, F South. The consolation prizes were awarded to Miss M. Colligan and Mi A. H. Cripps. RED CROSS SOCIETY At the monthly meeting of the Winchester Sub-Branch of the Red Cross Society, Mrs K. S. Stone-Wigg presided. The resignation of Mrs J. J Kenny ,who had left the district, was accepted. A large collection of refugee garments was received from the Winchester Basketball Club. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the club. It was agreed to give £lO to the patriotic special appeal fund and £2 to the soldiers’ parcel fund. A parcel of khaki wool received from the Timaru Patriotic ittee was distributed to members to be knitted into socks. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss B. Barrett for a donation of a knitted bed jacket to be raffled, the money to be spent on purchasing material for refugee garments. Members of the Geraldine V.A.D. detachment gave a demonstration of bandaging.
