Miss Hurle, Girls’ High School, has left to spend the holidays in New Plymouth. Mr and Mrs A. S. Elworthy, “Holme Station,” Pareora, have returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs C. L. Orbell and the Misses Orbell, “Pentlow,” have returned from Christchurch. Mrs F. Ki. Ward and family left yesterday for their cottage at Raincliff. Miss Stella Fitchett and Miss Audrey Ainge, Dunedin, will spend the school vacation at "The Hermitage,’ Mount Cook. Nurse E. Shanks, Timaru, and Miss Dorothy Davison, Pleasant Point, left for Akaroa and Christchurch, prior to Miss Davison joining the nursing staff of the Ashburton Hospital. Mrs E. H. Pike, Southland, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned to Timaru yesterday, and will leave to-morrow to stay with Mrs F. N. Seay, “Mt. Dalgety,” Fairlie. The engagement is announced of Shirley Haultain. youngest daughter of Dr. and Mrs G. H. Ussher, Sefton Street, and Leicester Wilce, only son of Mr and Mrs G. Fleetwood, Merivale, Christchurch. On the occasion of her approaching marriage, Miss Norma White was the recipient of a handsome cut crystal salad bowl and sugar basin from the staff of the C.F.C.A., with whom she has been associated for the last five years. The engagement is announced of Isabella, third daughter of Mr and Mrs R. McPherson, Cashel Street. Christchurch, and Sergeant Stan. O’Hara, Third Echelon, second son of Mrs O’Hara and the late Mr J. O’Hara. Timaru. The engagement is announced of Bruce Irwin Ede, Burnham Camp, youngest son of Mr Ede, of Timaru, and the late Mrs Ede, and Muriel Amelia, eldest daughter of Mrs Mather, of Melville Street, Dunedin, and the late Mr Mather.

Miss Chrissie Talbot, the ra.rlie soprano singer, who was one of the leading competitors in a singing contest held in Wellington two years ago, has been engaged by the Royal Wellington Choral Union to sing the soprano solos in the coming performance of Coleridge-Taylor’s cantata, “Hiawatha.” Visitors to Timaru to-day for the Rumbold-Shirtcliff wedding include Mr and Mrs J. At All Souls’ C’iir-ch, St. John’s Wood, London, on June 26, Flying Officer C. T. V. Craxton, R.A.F., son of Mr and Mrs Harold Craxton, was married to Miss Pamela Booth, daughter of Professor Victor Booth. F.R.A.M., and Mrs Booth, formerly of Oamaru. The bride is a well-known London photographer. It was in her studio that she met her husband nine months ago when he went to be photographed. The bridegroom is a son of the well-known accompanist, and the bride's father is a pianist who came from New Zealand a good many years ago.

An Auckland nurse who is to undertake service overseas at the second base hospital, is Miss Joyce Tyler, daughter of the Auckland City Engineer, Mr J. Tyler. Miss Tyler has been on the staff of the Auckland Public Hospital for eight years, in the last three of which she has been a sister. On Thursday afternoon the sisters of the Auckland Hospital presented Miss Tyler with an engraved hypodermic syringe in a case, the presentation being made by Miss A. V. Cussen, assistant lady superintendent. Sister Tyler’s brother, Dr. J. M. Tyler, is a member of the -..*rd Echelon, being attached to the special railway sectic.

Harris, Timbc: Controller to the Ministry of Supply, stated recently that no fewer than 50,000 tons of wood were used for women’s shoe heels, “somethimes as much as three inches hign,” writes the London ‘Daily Telegraph.” "When women realise what enormous shipping space they could save us,” he added, “I am sure they will see what can be done.” The point was made in consequence of the steps being taken to conserve timber, now that the whole of Europe has become closed to Britain as a source of supply. An advisory council, representing the many timber consuming industries and the trade unions, has been set up to study the directions in which restrictions can be imposed.
