WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WAIHAO DOWNS Mrs H. Green presided at the ninth birthday party of the Waihao Downs Women's Institute. Members of the Waihao Downs Red Cross Sub-Centre were guests. A biscuit eating competition was won by Mrs G. Hamber. Other competitions resulted: Best bowl flowers or foliage, Mrs J. G. Millar. Flowers, Miss M. Holdsworth. Prizes won during the year were presented by Mrs Green as follows: Mrs W. Newburn’s prize for most points (seniors), Mrs J. G. Millar. Mrs Millar’s prize for juniors, Mrs Cliff Briggs. Flowers, Miss Norma Wright. The president cut the birthday cake which had been given by herself. Mrs J. Cromie lighting the nine candles. Mrs Hamber returned thanks on behalf of the Red Cross. CLAREMONT At the May meeting of the Claremont Women’s Institute. Mrs Seyb presided over a fair attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Casey, Mrs Kelynack and Mrs McFedries in their recent bereavements. A competition, held during the afternoon was won by Miss Armstrong. Results of the monthly competition were as follows: Seniors, jam jar of leaves or leaves and berries. Miss Seyb 1, Mrs Talbot and Miss Armstrong 2 (equal). Apron not embroidered, Miss Armstrong 1, Miss Seyb 2. Premier bloom. Miss Seyb (rose). Juniors, jam jar leaves or leaves and berries. Gwen Seyb 1, Olive Husband 2, Ngaire White 3. Apron, not embroidered. Gwen Seyb 1. Ngaire White and Olive Husband 2. Premier bloom, Olive Husband (chrysanthemum). RANGITATA The monthly meeting of the F.angitata Women’s Institute was held in the Soldiers' Memorial Hall, Mrs Hiil presiding over a good attendance cf members. Mrs F. Martin, Temuka. gave a talk on her trip to America and at the conclusion was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Mrs G. Edgar. The competitions for the month were keenly contested and the awards were as follows: Ginger cake. Mavis E-’gar 1, Mrs Ruddenklau 2. Miss J. Shaw 3. Hand worked handkerchief. Miss Sua-.v I, and Mary Millar 3. Cluster bloom, Helen Chalmers 1. Single bloom, Mrs J. Watts and Miss Fleming 1 (equal). The hostesses were Mrs Edgar and Miss Mavis Edgar.
