Opportunities Offered New Zealanders By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, June 9 The inauguration by the Government of a scheme for the entry of New Zealanders as officers in the New Zealand naval forces was announced this evening by he Hon. F. Jones. The scheme, he said, formed part of the Government’s policy which aimed eventually to man the New Zealand naval forces entirely by New Zealand officers and men. The ne 7 scheme applied to the executive, engineering and accountant branches.
“At the inception of the scheme the numbers to be entered will be small and entered once a year only,” said Mr Jones. “For this year two candidates are required for each branch. The successful candidates will be entered as cadets (7) and probationary paymaster sub-lieutenants according to the branch chosen. Candidates for entry as cadets must be between the ages of 17 years and 18 years 8 months, for entry as cadets (F) between 17 and 19 years and for entry as probationary paymaster sub-lieutenants between 19 and 24, in all cases on December 31 next. All officers on entry will be sent to England for training with the Royal Navy, executive cadets for about three years, two of which, precec I by a term at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, they will spend with the sea-going fleets. Passages to England and return are paid by the Government. Some slight fi ancial assistance must be given by the parents of cadets, but sub-lieutenants are able to live on their pay. There are no tuition fees for the training given. Parents must provide the initial outfit towards which a liberal grant is made. Cadets and cadets (E) receive a further grant for the purchase of a uniform on ’-sacking the rank of sublieutenant.”
