OBITUARY

MRS MARY HAAR The death took place recently of Mrs Mary’ Haar, an old and highly respected resident of Winchester, and later of Temuka. Born in March, 1861, at Glen Gold, County Tipperary, Ireland, Mrs Haar (Mary Coughlin) arrived in Lyttelton on New Year's Day, 1880. There are still two of her shipmates surviving in the Temuka district, Mrs Mary McKenna, of Seadown, and Mrs McGillen, of Temuka. In 1887, Mrs Haar was married to Mr Conrad Haar, of Winchester, at the Catholic Cathedral in Christchurch, and resided at Winchester for the gre’ater part of their married life. She is survived by three sons and two daughters, the latter being Mrs Dan O’Connor, of Temuka, and Mrs Ben Jones, of Ash wick Flat, Fairlie. Grandchildren number 28. Her husband died eight years ago. During the Great War Mrs Haar was awarded the Order of St. John for services rendered with the Red Cross, having knitted 612 pairs of socks for the soldiers, besides other woolly comforts
