TABLE TENNIS

BEST ATTENDANCE ON RECORD Thst.the South Canterbury -able Tennis Association’s season will be one of the best in its history was indicated last night at the opening function, which was attended by 60 players and a number of spectators. The proceeds from the tournament amounted to £3. which will be given to the funds of the Red Cross Society. Mr R. L. Eames, president of the Association, in introducing the JMayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy, said that they had experienced a good season last year and, although this year they were under the cloud of war, it appeared that it would be an even better season. The Government had requested sporting organisations to carry on and in South Canterbury there were more players than ever before, and they were more enthusiastic than in previous years. He thanked the Spoils Shop Club for the use of the rooms for the opening function. After apologising for the absence of Mrs Tweedy. Mr Tweedy said that ae was delighted to hear that table tennis in South Canterbury had prospects for another good season. There was an increasing interest in the game, which was most encouraging as it was one cl the best of indoor games, although it was young as far as games went. It had emerged as ping pong about 40 years ago and had developed until t was now a game that required a high degree of skill and that gave ample exercise. Two area officers appointed under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act had called at Timaru recently and had asked the Timaru committee to encourage indoor sports. He had been pleased to be able to inform the officers that table tennis was one of the best organised sports in the district, and that they need nave no fears in regard to its progress. He expressed the gratitude of the Mayoress and himself at ths intention to give the proceeds of the opening night to the Red Cross Society as funds were badly needed and he feared would be required even more in the near future After wishing the Association success he officially declared the season open

A Yankee tournament was played, tib players taking part and supper was served. The winners of the toumament were: Miss O. Manning and Mr S. A. Bremford.
