JOLD AND SHOWERY Special to " The Timaru Herald " WELLINGTON, May 7. Winds—Strong and squally southerly winds. Weather—Changeable and very cold with passing showers. Seas—Rough to very rough. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation A deep depression still lies off the East Coast while the Intense anticyclone centred over Tasmania is as yet making little if any advance eastward. Forecast Winds—From a southerly quarter generally, strong at times In most districts and reaching gale force in exposed positions along the East Coast south of East Cape. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Moderate south of Farewell Spit and inshore north of East Cape, elsewhere rough and becoming very rough in places south of Castlepoint.
Eastern Tasman Sea—Fresh to strong southerly winds and rather rough to rough seas. Weather—Mainly fair in western districts from Taranaki southwards, steady rain or drizzle at first in Canterbury, Otago and Southland, otherwise changeable with showers and fair intervals; temperatures continuing very cold. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: A strong south-west wind with rain and low temperature continued yesterday. The barometei fell steadily to 29.40 (995.6 millibars) at 5 p.m. Geraldine: Conditions were bleak yesterday. Showers fell throughoul the day. Temuka: Yesterday was dull and squally with a wind from the southwest. Fifty-three points of rain fell in the 24 hours preceding 4 p.m. The maximum temperature was 46 degrees and the minimum. The glass was falling last evening.
Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Barometer, 29.2; thermometer, maximum, 46.5; minimum. 39.0; rain, 65pls; wind gauge miles run in last 24 hours, 181. Yesterday was overcast and showery with a cold wind blowing. Dunedin: Misty rain with occasional heavy showers prevailed throughout the day. There was no wind but temperatures were cool, the maximum being 51 degrees. The barometer fell to 29.70 inches (1006 millibars).
