NOTES ON THE RACING

Easy for Lockit Lockit, a strong win favourite, beat the opposition easily in the Brackenfield Highweight Handicap. Cymric soon opened out a gap from Waitaka-

Donadea and Lockit, with The Duel and In the Dark handy. There was no great ■change to the home turn, where Lockit moved up and had che race in safe keeping a furlong from the post. Lady Middleham came home strongly but Cymric hung on to beat her by a head. Waitaka headed the others, after a gap. Lockit looks on the way to useful staying form in open company.

A Speedy Mare

Guilder, a strong favourite, had an easy win in the Novice Stakes, after being prominent all the way. The Vulture showed out smartly from Baldoon, with Guilder handy, while Symbol was prominent, wide out. Benevolent, Ageratum and Great Heart were others well placed early. Guilder shot to the front over a furlong from home and was not troubled again. Valcron finished strongly just behind Baldoon, while Coup d’Etat, another late challenger, was only a neck away. Benevolent, Iceland Spar and Symbol were close up. Guilder, a Paper Money mare from Dutch Courage, dam of Nightcap, has great speed and will win more races on the flat, while she only needs to settle down to make a good hurdler. Baldoon ran his best race to date and will do better, as he has not done much work. The Vulture showed great speed and will improve.

Favourites Beaten

The bracketed pair, Gold Chief and Diamond Cluster, were the favourite choice each way in the Teviotdale Trot. Both horses were in front together from the start, Willa. Scapa Flow, Titus and Diamond Jim following them along the back. Willa dropped out at the six furlong post, but there was no further change to the straight. Gold Chief was then just in front, but Titus headed him a furlong from the post and won comfortably by a length from Scapa Flow, who beat Gold Chief by half a length. Welcome Stranger finished fast, a length away, with Diamond Cluster and Reservist heading the others.

Skyrena Improves

The Glasnevin Handicap was a good race, with an exciting finish. Grey Honour led out from St. Cloud and Skyrena but Great Flight, after a slow start, moved up to second place at the end of two furlongs, with St. Cloud, Rebel Star and Flame Queen next. There was not much change to the straight, where The Wrecker, Trench Fight and Skyrena were improving their positions. Skyrena having been knocked back after two furlongs. The field was spread across the course a hundred yards from the post. Skyrena took charge a little further on and won by a length. The Wrecker got up on the post to beat Grey Honour for second, with Great Flight. Trench Fight and St. Cloud heads away. Skyrena has developed into a good mare. Trench Fight was having his first race since the spring and his turn will come soon. Grey Honour is another to be watched, as it was his first race since August.

First Win

The G. B. Starky Handicap, a mile and a quarter race for hacks, drew a fine field of 15, and it was a good contest. Sham Boy, starting from the outside, and sweating freely, soon dashed to the front, followed by Pink Lad, with Ripley, Prudent Prince. Capricious and Ferriby. There was not much change in the order at the home turn. Sham Boy had a clear lead at this stage, but he collapsed when the straight was reached, leaving Pink Lad in charge. He hung on well, winning easily. Prudent Prince stayed on well, stalling off a challenge by King’s Toast for second. Dranoel came with a late run to.be fourth. Ripley tired to fifth, followed by Captain Bruce, who finished fast. Sham Boy and Ferriby were next, then Capricious, who failed in the run home, after being about third to the straight. This was the first win for Pink Lad, but he had shown promise more than once and will be unlucky if he fails to win some more races.

After many disappointments since she came back from her Australian trip last autumn, Disdain was caught in a galloping mood and won the Amberley Handicap, nine furlongs, with a bit to spare from Wild Talk, the favourite. Knight Commander and Studley Royal lost a lot of ground at the start Wild Talk began best from Cape Gabo and Second Innings, but at the six furlong post Studley Royal was in second place. Knight Commander then made a fast run, taking the lead from Wild Talk at the halfmile post. Disdain was last at this stage, but she moved up to be third when the straight. Knight Commander retired a little further on and Disdain ran to the lead, beating Wild Talk by nearly a length. Settlement was three lengths away, with Second Innings a length further back. There was not much pace on in the early stages. Exciting Finish There was an exciting finish in the Seadown Handicap, Ryetown scoring narrowly and paying a double figure dividend, in spite of his good track form. Improvident soon took charge from Sweet Mystpry, Synthetic, Gold Don and Rebellion, while Scarteen, Queen Linda and Ryetown were slow away. Rebellion joined Improvident in front at the half-mile past, Sweet Mystery, Great Swoop and Grey Silk being next. Rebellion dropped out when the straight was reached, while Improvident started to tire at the distance. Scarteen and Ryetown came on fast and in a great battle Ryetown won by a neck from Scarteen, who beat Sweet Mystery in the last stride. Improvident was a moderate fourth, with Great Swoop and Grey Silk a long way back, at the head of the others. This was Ryetown’s first win. Great Swoop was sold by the Clifford trustees after the race and will join J. McLean's stable at Riccarton. Probably he will be tried lated on over hurdles.

Won All the Way

Sunworthy began smartly and led all the way hi the Kowal Trot Handicap. Marfax was soon in second place, with Top Hand, Sunny Corner, Burt Scott and Walter Moore next. Walter Moore broke before going two furlongs, but there was no further change to the straight, where Marfax commenced to tire. Sunworthy held his place easily and won by three lengths from Sunny Corner, who beat Top Hand by a similar margin. Clive Brook and Burt Scott were close up

REHANDICAPS FOR ASHBURTON
