“HOLLYWOOD CAVALCADE” Alice Faye and Don Ameche, with a fine supporting cast, appear at the State Theatre in "Hollywood Cavalcade," a splendid technlcolour production reviewing the rise of the film industry. "Three Sons” A revelation of the tendency of children of the rich to waste their inheritance on riotous living, "Three Sons" affords Edward Ellis of “A Man To Remember” fame, a strong new screen role. The gripping story presents the distinguished stage and film actor as a long-sighted businessman who takes his wife to Chicago directly after the metropolis has been gutted by the great holocaust of 1871. Imbued with the courage of his convictions, he is determined to establish on the city's ashes a huge mercantile dynasty for his future children. The story traces vividly the growth of the enterprise into a powerful business. Counterpointing Jhis is the growth of the children of the ambitious merchar. who makes millions for his three sons and a daughter, only to spoil them V -h too much luxury. REGENT THEATRE “HOME FROM HOME’ Britain sends us reinforcements of laughter with her No. 1 radio comedian Sandy Powell, leading the fun in "Home From Home,” which opened at the Regent on Saturday. So let’s declare war on gloom and have a good hearty laugh with Sandy in this riotous story of a convict who prefers the peace, quiet and comfort of his prison cell to home with a nagging wife, who continually “insists” that he look lor work instead of staying in bed half the day. But all good things must come to an end and when Sandy’s sentence is completed he is sent out into the cold, cruel world where, unfortunately for Sandy, his wife also lives. Then begins a hilarious battle to fall foul of the law again, but somehow the authorities continually refuse to let Sandy go back to his "Home From Home.” A full length third dlmentional technicolour cartoon “Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp.' featuring the inimitable “Popeye," will also be shown on the programme. Baby Contest With the entrants in the St. John Centennial baby contest, all photographed by the movie camera, the stage is set for the grand opening ol the baby contest on Wednesday next. May 8 at the Regent Theatre. The contestants have been divided into three groups. The total number of entrants ib 206 and dividing this total into three means that babies 1-68, 69-136 and 137-206 Will compete on different nights. In other words 68 babies Will be screened at each session over the period May 8 to May 31. The system of judging the six winning babies is done by public vote. A person purchasing a ticket at the box office in the usual way will find that for every 6d spent he will receive one voting coupon, so that In the case of a 1/6 ticket being purchased he will receive three voting coupons. This also applies to the 1/- and 2/3 tickets. The former will receive two and the latter four coupons. The counting Is in the hands of the St. John Ambulance officials and scrutinised by a member of the Timaru Police Force. Progressive results of the contest will be on view In the vestibule of the Theatre.
