WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
GLENITI At the last meeting of the Gleniti Women’s Institute the president welcomed visitors and members.
Mrs Raymond was elected a new member. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Loomes and family, who have suffered a bereavement. Mrs Cross gave a comprehensive report on the Federation meeting at Waimate and Mrs Rawson on the Group, meeting at Fairview. Mesdames Curr and McAlister thanked the speakers. The president read a message from the Queen. Mrs North read the English link letter from Crowle. A competition arranged by Mrs MacMillan was won by L. Fountaine. Two pianoforte solos by Mrs Nicholas were greatly appreciated. The president spoke about the birthday party and members were asked to bring a basket. It was unanimously decided to send 10/- to the sick and wounded soldiers’ fund. It was decided to write a letter i of appreciation to Mrs Kelso for all she has done in the Women’s Institute movement. The competitions resulted as follows:—Specimen bloom, Mrs D. Ramsay; jar of raspberry jam, Mrs Finlay 1, Mrs Winnington 2, Miss F. Pearse 3. HILTON There was a good attendance of members at the April meeting of the Hilton Institute. Miss Scott presided. An invitation to attend the birthday party of the Gapes Valley Institute was accepted. Two new members were welcomed. Miss Pierce was appointed “Home and Country" agent. The golden thread talk was given by Mrs Sharpe. Miss Scott reported on the Federation meeting. Further arrangements were made for the birthday party to be held in June. Mr Sharpe gave a demonstration of cane work, for which he was accorded a vote of thanks. The results of the monthly competitions were as follows:—Kisses, Mrs Toomey; best bloom. Mrs Leary 1, Mrs Beaven 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Kelly and Tripney and Miss Staniland. ESK VALLEY Mrs W. Coup presided over a fair attendance at the April meeting of the Esk Valley Women's Institute. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Prime Minister and to the late Mr J. Borman. Much interest was shown in a comprehensive report given by Mrs Coup of the annual meeting of the Waimate District Federation. It was unanimously decided to send a delegate from Esk Valley to the Dominion Federation conference to be held in
Wellington in July. Recognising the need for more Institute furniture, members agreed to raise funds by holding "White Elephant’’ sales. Except for the time given to a short demonstration on "coat posies,’’ the afternoon was spent in sewing for the Red Cross.
The results of monthly competitions were as follows: —Specimen bloom, Mrs Copland 1, Miss Copland 2, Mrs Coup 3; jar of flowers, Mrs Coup 1, Miss Roberts 2; butter sponge, Mrs L. P. Mills 1, Miss Roberts 2; soldiers’ hand-sewn handkerchief, Miss J. Pye 1.
