CLOTHING INDUSTRY
WORKERS WANT HIGHER WAGES By Telegraph - Wiess Association WELLINGTON, May 2. The measure of protection being enjoyed by the clothing industry in i New Zealand because of the import ; restrictions was advanced in Court by , Mr John Roberts ,of Christchurch, as one reason why there should be an increase in wages of clothing trade employees, shirt and white workers, and dressmakers and milliners in applications for new awards for these classes of workers. He said the Government’s policy was not a temporary one. but a declared policy of protecting New Zealand secondary industries. Without overseas competition, the clothing industry was now buoyant, and the difficulty was to find workers to cope with the volume of work offering. Evidence is proceeding on points in dispute not settled in Conciliation Council. Sue missions in reply to both sides I are to be put in in writing. The Court ] reserved its decision.
