RICCARTON NOTES

M. CONZA’S TEAM

Special to “The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, May 2.

M. Conza has returned home after a tour which extended over more than two months. He left here in February, starting off at Hokitika, after which he assisted at the other meetings on the West Coast circuit, followed by Nelson and Marlborough. The team numbered nine horses when tae trip opened and some of them proved to be encumbrances, to be dropped as the tour progressed. The total results, however, was- very satisfactory, as 11 wins, with 21 minor placings, were put together by five members of the party. Roy Bun did best, with six wins and three places. His form was wonderfully consistent, save for one bad race early in the tour. Skyrena had four wins and three places. She was never out of the money till her last two starts, by which time she was carrying big weights. Rebel Rose had one win but was unplaced in five other starts, so her form was not good. Lady Magellan looks a much better prospect, for though she did not win, she was placed seven times. Land Raid was very unlucky, being in the money eignt times, including five seconds, some of them being very narrow defeats.

The leading pair in the team, Roy Bun and Skyrena, look in great order. The latter will be racing in the Glasnevin Handicap at the Amberley meeting on Saturday, while both will be in action at meetings later on, where the stable will have other candidates. Land Raid may be seen among the jumpers, as he is to be schooled over hurdles. Philibun had the misfortune to run a screw into a foot, but is making a good recovery and will resume work soon. It is hoped to have these four at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting this month, after which they may go on to Wingatui. Also in the stable now is Richelieu Pearl, who was placed with Conza at the Marlborough meeting. She is a four-year-old mare by Black Ronald and her form is moderate. Conza is her fourth trainer this season, during which she has been twice second and three times third in 21 starts.

Counterlunch, a Paper Money mare owned in Southland, has resumed track work after being restricted to road exercise for some time. She is a smart galloper and J. W. Pankhurst hopes to have her racing again at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting.

C. C. McCarthy has started out to school the Day Comet mare, Scarlet Rambler, owner by Major G. F. Hutton. She has done some hunting but she will require a good deal of education before she can rank as a proficient steeplechaser, as her jumping so far is patchy. Two others in McCarthy's team are to have a trial as jumpers. They are Improvident and Prediction, who have shown promise when ridden over the pony hurdles by the stable’s small apprentice, C. Fox.

The No. 6 grass track was in good order for work at Riccarton this morning and some useful gallops were registered in the final trials for the Amberley meeting.

Captain Bruce and Dranoel were on
