WEATHER SOUTH CANTERBURY FORECAST
FAIR TO FINE Special to “The Timaru Herald." WELLINGTON, March 19 Winds—Sea breezes freshening during the day on the coast, but otherwise moderate north-westerlies predominating. Weather—Some scattered morning mist or fog, but the weather otherwise fair to fine and mild. Seas—Slight. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation There has been little change in the situation, an almost stationary anticyclone is centred over the North Island while pressure remains low over south-eastern Australia. Forecast Winds—Rather variable with easterly predominating in the Auckland Peninsula and northerly to westerly elsewhere: force mainly light or moderate but freshening later south of Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay. Seas (New Zealand waters)—Rather rough about Cook Strait and rising in the vicinity of Foveaux Strait; slight to moderate elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea—Light to moderate northerly winds and moderate seas, but wind and sea increasing later in the southern portion. Weather—Mainly fair to fine and somewhat milder but with considerable morning cloud and some scattered mist or light drizzle; conditions probably becoming unsettled in the far south-west after about 24 hours. Records at Timaru Park yesteiday were:— Barometer—29.9l. Max. temp.—72.4. Min. temp, on grass—44.2. Wind—N.E.l. Sunshine—lo.l hours. Rainfall to date this year—s.4lins. Rainfall to date last year—3.llins Sunshine to date this year—s44.4hrs. Sunshine to date last year—s32.3hrs. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: Yesterday was fine, mild and sunny with no wind in the morning and a light north-east breeze in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 63 degrees. The barometer fell slightly to 29.9361 n. (1014 millibars) at 5 p.m. Fairlie: Yesterday was fine and sunny.
Geraldine: Bright sunshine with very warm conditions and a slgiht nor’-westerly breeze. Tanaka: Yesterday was fine and sunny with an easterly breeze. The maximum temperature was 74 degrees and the minimum 46. The glass w’as falling last evening. Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Barometer, 29.4; thermometer, maximum, 65.1; minimum, 46.2; rain, 1 point; bright sunshine, 6 hours 30 minutes; wind gauge, miles run in last 24 hours, 88. Yesterday was sunny and warm.' Dunedin: The sun shone brightly yesterday and there was a light breeze from the north-east. Temperatures were mild to warm, the maximum being 77 degrees. The barometer fell during the day but was steady later at 29.98 inches (11015 millibars).
