CONSCRIPTION
Sir,—Your correspondent “Ad Rem” must be a very fluent speaker and would make a good recruiting officer, but he will not make me believe that 1000 volunteers would be of more value to their leaders than 10,000 dragooned and jack-booted conscripts. I am sure that if we had conscripts they would all be classed equal with any boy who enlisted. "Ad Rem” says I should encourage the voluntary system. I will do everything in my power to help win this war, but I do not think it right to ask anyone to go while I stay at home to reap all the benefits and have the comforts of home life. I say we must all go to save the women and children from destruction. Hitler does not have a voluntary system.
"Ad Rem” says men were working for 2/6 a day or starve. That must be in the old depression days of past Governments. As Parliament has not been on the air for some months it is comforting that someone has not forgotten to bring that up again. I think it would be better to visualise what our prospects will be in the future and forget the past.—l am, etc.. CONSCRIPT. Timaru, February 9.
