FAIRLIE PICNIC HOLIDAY
Shops Want Saturday Closing
No Decision Yet Made
Businessmen in Fairlie yesterday discussed a proposal that the school picnic, which has been set down for next Thursday, should be held on Saturday so that shops may close without dislocation of services. No decision has yet been made pending advice from the Railways Department concerning the special train.
Mr J. Braddick, president of the Citizens’ Association, said that if it was not possible to get. a train for Saturday, shops would close on Thursday. Saturday was favoured because many shops ran deliveries to the country on Thursdays and these would be upset if a holiday was held on that day. With the petrol restrictions country’ people were finding it more difficult to get into town, and business people were anxious to see that they got their supplies regularly.
