WEATHER SOUTH CANTERBURY FORECAST
FAIR TO FINE Special to “ The Timaru Herald ” WELLINGTON. February 7. Winds—Strong winds from a westerly quarter reaching gale force at first in some exposed positions but moderating. Weather—Fair to fine and warm. Sea—Rough offshore. DOMINION FORECAST General Situation The cyclone situated west of Taranaki yesterday moved rapidly across New Zealand last night and is now located south-east of Otago. Pressure is relatively high to the north. Forecat i Winds—From a westerly quarter, fresh to strong generally and reaching gale force in exposed positions from Taranaki and Hawke's Bay southwards. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Moderate inshore on the East Coast, elsewhere rough to high. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong southwest to west winds to gales and rough to very rough seas. Weather—For the most part fair to fine though boisterous, showery conditions persisting in the western and far southern portions of the South Island; temperatures cool in the south-west and south, elsewhere mild to warm. TIMARU RECORDS Sun rose at Timaru to-day at 5.38 a.m.; sets 7.43 p.m. High water at Timaru 1.58 a.m. and 2.18 p.m. PHASES OF THE MOON
Brilliant sunshine prevailed yesterday although a strong north-westerly wind made conditions unpleasant. Records at Timaru Park yesterday were:— Max. temp.—73.4. Min. temp, on grass—46. Wind—N.W.7. Rainfall—.37in. Rainfall to date this year—3.lBins. Rainfall to date last year—l.2Bins. Sunshine—13 hours. Sunshine to date this year—244.sshrs. Sunshine to date last year—263. Ihrs IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch: There was a clear sky and brilliant sunshine all day with a high north-west wind. The maximum temperature was 74.8 degrees. The barometer at 7 p.m. recorded 29.38 inches (994.9 millibars).
Lake Tekapo: The sun shone on 29 days in January for a total of 252.8 hours, a daily average of 8.1 hours. Rain fell on nine days for a total of 3.93 in.
Fairlie: Yesterday was fine but very windy.
Geraldine: Yesterday was fine and sunny with a strong wind from the north.
Temuka: Yesterday was sunny but a westerly gale made conditions unpleasant. The maximum temperature was 70 degrees and the minimum 43. Twenty-four points of rain fell on Tuesday. The glass was rising last evening.
Waimate (for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Barometer, 28.6; maximum, 75.2; minimum, 48; graSvS minimum. 42; wind. S.W.; rain, 70 points; bright sunshine, 6 hours, 36 minutes; wind gauge, miles run in the last 24 hours, 87. Yesterday was very warm, with a strong north-west wine.
Dunedin: Yesterday morning was fine after heavy rain on the previous night but a strong wind prevailed from the south-west and temperatures were mild. The sky became overcast about mid-day but cleared later. The maximum temperature was 64 degrees. The barometer was steady at 29.17 inches (988 millibars).
