ATHLETICS PRESENT TITLE HOLDERS

Championship Cup Past Winners of Trophy (By Relay.) South Canterbury Sub-Centre championships will be held on Saturday at Temuka commencing at 2 p.m. The programme has been arranged for senior events with two open handicap events for women and two for men. The meeting will be held on the oval in the Domain. Good entries have been received from the clubs but the fields will not be up to last year’s record as a good quota of the senior athletes are now on Active Service. Trophies for Competition The major trophy for annual championship competition is the Champion Challenge Cup of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club. The cup is awarded to the athlete gaining most points in championship competition, the points being awarded two for first and one for second. - The present holder of the cup is J. H. Opie, Temuka. This trophy has now been in competition over a period of 68 years. Many of the athletes who have had their names engraved on this cup are well known in this district, and have taken a prominent part in the building of South Canterbury and district. Cloake and A. A. Grant. 1939 J. H. Opie. The present holder of the Challenge Cup will not be competing and on performances this season it is difficult to forecast results. The conditions for the competition favours an athlete who has a good average of performance in both track and field events. The competitor who appeals most at the present time is C. Goulter (Fairlie). He is likely to gain points in the sprint events and also in the broad jump, hop, step and jump, high jump, pole vault and javelin. Another competitor who should score well is R. Mehrtens (S.C.). He is likely to be well placed in the following events: hurdles, jave-

lin, shot putt, hammer, discus and the high jump. However quite a number of the competitors particularly in track events who may score well are J. Sinclair (S.C.), J. Evans (S.C.), J. Burke (Temuka), W. Watson (Tka), D. O’Connor (Fairlie), W. Murphy <Wte), J. Spillane (Tka), D. Squire (S.C.), S. Allom (Fairlie).

The following athletes are the present title holders in the senior championships:—looyds, R. A. Rodgers (S.C.); 220yds, R. A. Rodgecs (S.C.); 440yds, H. Shea (S.C.); 880yds, H. Shea (S.C.); 1 mile, H. Shea, D. Squire, equal; 3 mile, W. Young (S.C.); 220yds hurdles, N. Ford (S.C.); discus throw, A. G. Redmond (Tka); hammer throw', H. Cloake (S.C.); javelin throw, J. H. Opie (Tka.); shot putt, J. H. Opie (Tka); long jump, J. H. Opie (Tka); hop, step and jump, V. Hadlee (SC.); high jump, H. Cloake (S.C.); pole vault, J. H. Opie (Tka.); 1 mile medley relay, South Canterbury Club. The South Canterbury Sub-Centre junior and women’s championships will be conducted at Ashbury Park, Tlmaru, on Saturday, February 17.
