Fne Record of New Zealand United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, February 6. The Secretary of State for the Dominions (Mr R. A. Eden), broadcasting to New Zealand, wishes the Dominion many happy returns of the day. "It is a great pleasure to send a message of congratulation and greeting on behalf of his Majesty's Government and the people of Great Britain,” sa'd Mr Eden. “Your celebrations must be overshadowed by the knowledge that the Empire is at war. Yet looking back on a hundred years of history we see the practice and development of those very principles for which we are fighting to-day. The Treaty of Waitangi and wise and tolerant statesmanship have resulted in ever-increasing co-operation between the settlers and the Maoris by which a strong and independent pelfgoverning Dominion has grown to full nationhood—a free Dominion, yet bound by allegiance to the Throne by ties 'light as air but as strong as links of iron.'
