PEOPLE WANT WAR AIMS

Japanese Policy Criticised

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, February 6.

The Tokio correspondent of the Associated Press of America states that further demands have been made for the publication of Japan’s war aims, by members of the Diet, coupled with criticism of the Government’s control of press and radio. Mr Shigco Sugasawa, in the Upper House, said that oppression was engendering popular suspicion.

Mr Jotar Okawakami, in the Lower House, said that the Government failure to publish its peace terms was causing doubt and apprehension among the people over the methods of ending the war.

There was uproar in the Diet on Friday last, when Mr Takao Saito, leader of the Minseito Party, caustically attacked ' the Government, demanding a statement of its war aims. Members cried ‘No” when Mr Saito said: ‘‘Peace can only be offered when the country keeps the Army in the background.” This is seen as a suggestion that the Army should withdraw from China before negotiating peace.
