WIMATE NEW FURNITURE
Primary School Grant of f4OO Advce was received from the Canterbun,’ Education Board at a meeting of the Waimate Primary School Committee on Tuesday night, that a grant of £4OO had been made for the purpose of providing new tables and chairs to replace part of the existing desks, which were obsolete and regarded as being in a worse condition than at other schools. The committee decided to forward letters of thanks to the Education Board and to Mr D. C. Kidd. M.P., for his efforts in the matter. It was decided to discontinue the use of the travelling rural school library. Final arrangements were made for the excursion to Timaru on Saturday. The headmaster (Mr J. M. Wilson) reported that the roll number was 514, and that 36 new enrolments had been made. SWIMMING CARNIVAL A decision to hold a swimming carnival at McCulloch’s Bridge, part of the proceeds to be devoted to the patriotic funds, was reached at a meeting of the committee of the Waimate Amateur Swimming Club on Tuesday night. It was decided to hold the carnival on February 24. The good work done for the club by Mr D. Jones, who had enlisted, was mentioned, and it was decided to hold a farewell carnival for him to-night. GOOD RATE COLLECTION Rates totalling £7950 were collected by the Waimate Borough Council up to Monday, the last day before the imposition of the 10 per cent penalty. The rates struck amounted to £8473, and the collection represented 93.41 per cent, compared with 93.75 for the same period last year. The balance outstanding is £558. The amount paid on the last day was £2371, compared with £1565 in 1939. TENNIS The Waihao Lawn Tennis SubAssociation’s team to play North Otago at Oamaru on Saturday is: Miss 11.I 1 . Neale. Miss G. PERSONAL Mrs Williams. Christchurch, who has been the guest of Mrs Garland, “Seaview,” has returned home. Mrs R. J. Collis has returned from Kakanui.
Miss M. A. Borrie, who has been visiting her home in Waimate, has returned to Blenheim. Mrs W. P. Wilson. Manse Street, and Mrs Paterson, Harris Street, are spending a few days in Oamaru.
