PACIFIST RALLIES
SHOULD THEY BE PERMITTED? By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH January 23. Members of the Christchurch City Council will be asked at a meeting of the Council next Monday evening to decide whether there should be future open air meetings of pacifist organisations in the city during the war. It is believed that after a long meeting to-day, the By-laws Committee of the Council recommended that the question be decided by the full Council and not by the committee itself. The Christchurch C'.ty Council, under its by-laws, has authority to decline permits for open air meetings to any organisation. The Council some time ago discussed an application from Communist and pacifis* organisations to hold meetings It ,vas found that councillors were sharply cvided on the issue. It is expecte.. that the meeting of the Council, the first t.. year, will la' for several hours, as apparently •embers will hear deputations from both pacifist organisations L the Citv and the Christchurc' Returned Soldiers’ Association, whl/ i is concerned 1 the dispute because of that the association was associated i i • ecent attempts to st-, pacifist rallies.
