NOTICE TO QUIT

House To Be Demolished WAR WIDOW’S PLAINT By Telegraph— Pres? Association AUCKLAND. January 23. Faced with notice to quit her present residence owing to pending demolition under threat of legal proceedings, an Auckland war widow, Mrs C. A. Wiley, of Newmarket, Is unable to secure a house. Mrs Wiley said that two of her five soils were already serving their country. One was in the Achilles and the other in camp. Two others lived with her. “While my sons are going off to the war their mother cannot find a house in which to live,” Mrs Wiley added. “I am desperate. To-day I have spent the whole day tramping round until my feet ache trying to find a house. I have had my name down for a State house for two years and have been to see the Housing Department in Auckland and have written again and again. I have letters from everyone from the Minister, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, downward, saying that my case would be borne in mind with others in allocating houses. Not long ago they wrote to say there were 7000 other cases in Auckland to be considered and each had to be treated on its merits. Could there be any more serious case than mine My sons and 1 will be out on the street with our furniture before long. “It is not as if I was a bad tenant,” Mrs Wiley added. “I was shifted by my landlord to this house from another he owned six months ago after 10 years in the previous house. Before that I was 12 years in a house and riy rent books prove that I have paid promptly and regularly. Since I have been here I have painted the walls of some rooms and made other improvements at my own expense. I have all my own furniture and cannot be expected to go to the expense of boarding or hiring furnished rooms.”

The house Mrs Wiley occupies is an old one and is wanted for demolition to enable a block of flats to be built. She has been advised by the Fair Rents Office in Auckland that the landlord is entitled to possession for this purpose. In a last effort to secure a State house, Mrs Wiley has now sent the notice to quit to the Housing Department in Wellington.
