GRASS SEED
QUALITY LINES BEING THRESHED GERMINATION TESTS GOOfr In contradistinction to last year the grass seed being harvested this season is in excellent condition and although the recent dry spell considerably reduced yields, there are, however, quite a number of good crops in South Canterbury. The returns on the whole are not up to expectations. Owing to the scarcity of feed many farmers were compelled to feed off their crops. Seed so far harvested is dressing well but is on the light side. Germination tests, however, are very good and are in marked contrast to the tests obtained from seed last year, when, owing to the Incessant rainfall, many crops lodged at the period the ryegrass was in flower, with the result that the blowing of the pollen, which is essential to satisfactory germination, was interfered with. The wet conditions also encouraged blind disease in the seed head and had a most deteriorating effect on the crop and brought about such a low germination percentage. For perennial ryegrass the germination results were the worst on record.
