ATTACK ON FRENCH OUTPOST

Heavy Enemy Casualties United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright PARIS, January 21. Heavy snow has fallen on the Western Front although temperatures have risen slightly. French patrols were unusually active over the week-end, particularly in the Blies area where they penetrated enemy territory for two miles. German detachments, under cover of a box barrage, raided a French outpost. French artillery quickly intervened and laid down a heavy curtain of fire. The defenders threw back the Germans with light machine-guns, inflicting heavy casualties. A lost German soldier wandered into the French trenches.

French ’planes twice reconnoitred southern Germany and a German warplane flew over eastern France.
