“ The Timaru Herald,” January 23, 1880 Waimate Agricultural Association Founded A meeting was held at Waimate wo evenings ano. of persons interested in the formation of a Society for the encouragement of improvement in agriculture, etc., at which it was resolved to take the necessarj’ steps to form such a Society, to be called “The Waimate Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Society.” A committee was chosen, with power to add to their number, to canvass the district for members. Mr Major was elected hon. secretary pro tern, and authorised to call a meeting of intending members on February 7 next, for the purpose of organising the Society. An influential committee was also appointed to arrange for holding a show’ of grain and other produce soon after harvest. Waimate being the centre of a large and thriving district, and at a considerable distance from the show grounds of any existing Agricultural Society, there Is no doubt that such a Society as the one proposed would have a very good field in which to operate. We hope to hear that, in their canvass for members the committee w’ill meet with an encouraging degree of success. Maori Land Taken New Plymouth: The Government take possession of the Waimate Plains at once, and have had distributed among the natives printed notices to the effect that the Government had decided that the Commission shall hear only the complaints of any native who will be in a position to prove an individual title to any land, but any question relating to confiscation will not be listened to
