The chairman of the United States Naval Affairs Committee (Mr Carl Vinson) cut the proposed 1.300,000.000 dollars naval construction authorisation to 800.000.000 dollars. eliminating 34 destroyers and reducing the ton-

nage of the proposed expansion from 400.000 to 218,000 including three aircraft carriers, 34 submarines, also an unspecified number of cruisers. Ho was leaving to the Navy’s discretion the specific number to be built within the authorised tonnage. Mr Vinson instanced that it would be possible to build four 27,500-ton cruisers compared with the present 10,000-tons limit.
