Southern Hemisphere Championship

The most important trap shooting event ever held in New Zealand was the 1940 Southern Hemisphere single rise clay target championship decided to-day at the Centennial trap-shooting tournament of the New Zealand Gun Clubs’ Association. It was a5O target event, all off 18 yards. Seventy-four shooters competed. The winner was C. Webber (Morrinsville), who made a perfect score of 50. The runner-up, T. M. Pratt (Otorohanga) broke up. There were no scores of 48, but 47 targets were broken by W. Oates (Tokomaru Bay), J. Mills (Hastings) and I. G. Watkins (Rangiora). Next best with 46 were A. N. Turner (Christchurch), C. E. Thomasen (Waitakururu), G. Bretherton (Masterton) and H. Grennell (Port Levy). Webber received £74 from the sweepstake, a trophy order to the value of £lB/10/- and the championship silk sash. Pratt received £37 and a trophyorder valued at £9/5/-. J- Mills. W. Oates and Watkins each received £l2/6/8.

In presenting the trophies, the Hon. W. E. Parry congratulated Webber on a perfect performance. He said that Pratt was one of the most consistent shots in New Zealand and a good sportsman.

A £1 sweepstake attracted 45 competitors. The conditions were 15 targets from handicap marks on the fivetrack system. Possibles were scored by E. Groome (Otane) and C. E. Brown (Diamond Harbour), who each received £l5/6/-. J. Dobson (Hamilton), H. Grennell (Port Levy), L. Smith (Hutt), H.J Carter (Otorohanga.) and A. Walker (Hawera) each broke 14 targets and divided £5/8/- between them.

The next event, a £1 sweepstake, drew 73 competitors. H. Grennell (Port Levy) and R. Williams (Carterton) each scored the possible, 20, and took first and second prize money, £24/16 6 each. Grennell shot off 17 yards and Williams off 12.

There were 48 competitors for two trophies valued at £lO/10/- and £5/5/respectively given by R. E. Cuthbertson (Wanganui) in a 15 target event. M. Pratt (Otorohanga), W. Oates (Tokomaru). E. Flux (Hutt), R. Lindsay (Kerepehi) and G. V. Edge (Bluff) scored the possible. They divided the optional sweepstake and received £3/1/each. In the shoot-off for the trophies Oates won on the fifth round from Edge, who took second place with four kills.
