WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WAMATE FEDERATION In spite of the very wet day, the attendance at the first “school” arranged by the executive of the Waimate District Federation of Women’s Institutes was between 50 and 60. and showed that members were very keen to take advantage of the classes arranged. The “school” was held at “Scotston,” St. Andrews, the home of Mrs W. E. Mills, the Federation president. A drama class, conducted by Mrs Clarke, of Timaru, was most interesting and should prove of great value to the Play Circles in the various Groups of the Federation. Another class largely attended was that of glove-making. Mrs L. R. Bell, St. Andrews, was in charge. The proper type of skin to be used in glovemaking was explained and samples of skins and gloves were on view. Members were most interested and many pairs of gloves were well on the way to bring made at the conclusion of the class. Mrs R. Gray, St. Andrews, was in charge of the dressmaking class. This was another large section and the correct use of patterns was explained and many took advantage of having frocks cut out and fitted. The executive was most grateful to Mr Shackell. of Timaru, who gave an instructive talk on window drapings and the making of loose covers. The school commenced at 10.30 a.m.
and after afternoon tea votes of thanks were accorded the instructors of the various classes and Mr Shackell. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mr and Mrs Mills and Miss Mills for the tremendous amount of time and trouble they had gone to to make the afternoon the success it was.
