Auckland , Leading In Sanders Cup

Caress (Auckland) with two wins to her credit at the end of the second day’s racing for the Sanders Cup, is in a likely position to win the trophy. She has 77 points. Canterbury 53. Wellington 18. Southland 17. Otago 5. In the Cornwell Cup contest. Wanganui has two wins and Wellington one. Wellington is leading on points in the Tauranga contest with Nelson second. Tauranga third and Greymouth fourth. Wellington is leading on points in

the idle-along contest with 15 points. Bay of Plenty has 12, Canterbun 7 12. Wanganui 8. Nelson 8. South Canterbury 5. Gicvmouth 4. South Auckland 3, Hawke’s Bay 3, Otago 3. and Marlborough 2. In this afternoon’s race Wanganui was disqualified for fouling Otago.

Light southerly weather to-day-suited Auckland in the Sanders Cup and Wanganui in the Cornwell Cup races, each winning the two races held in their classes. The Auckland boat caress is beautifully finished, well suited to light weather and her crew seem to be at their best when there is not too much wind. Canterbury and Wellington are more at home in a strong breeze. Southland i surprised yachtsmen by putting up j excellent performances in the two! races to-day. and with more competition in her home port would probably be up with the leaders all the time. I H. Wagstaff (Wellington), who came home an easy winner in the first Cornwell Cup race on Monday, slipped badly to-day. finishing ninth in the morning and eighth in the afternoon. IDLE-ALONG CHAMPIONSHIP SOUTH CANTERBURY IMPROVES By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. January 16. Bay of Plenty and Marlborough were disqualified in the second race for the idle-along championship this morning. | Bay of Plenty fouled the mark and Marlborough fouled Nelson. There was a delay of nearly two hours in starting the race, the Bay-of Plenty boat Rose Marie being considered not to conform to the measurements. They used Vampire, an Evans Bay boat, for both races. At the start of the race Wellington lost time through mistaking the recall flag for their own. Again at the finish, when she seemed to be a certain winner, the skipper. E. Beck, lost his grip on the tiller and had to go about twice before crossing the line. The finishing times and placings were:— Canterbury, 12hrs 50min 1 Wellington. 12hrs 50min 2sec .. ..2 Wanganui. 12hrs 52min ssec .. ..3 Nelson. 12hrs 52min 40sec 4 West Coast. 12hrs 53min 48sec .. .. 5 South Auckland. 12hrs 55min 35sec .. 6 Otago. 12hrs 56min 7 South Canterbury. 12hrt 56min 32sec 8 Hawke’s Bay. 12hrs 57min 23sec .. 9 Bay of Plenty finished third and Marlborough sixth. Bay of Plenty, who have performed consistently well, again went to the fore early in the race this afternoon and retained their position to the finish. Nelson performed surprisingly well to come home third. West Coast and Hawke’s Bay. who are new competitors in the contest. did very well to finish sixth and seventh respectively. The West Coast crew had not sailed an idle-along before the start of the contest.
