SOCIAL NOTES

Mrs R. L. Wigley, Kitchener Square, has returned from a visit to Dunedin. Mrs G. W. Scott, Rosewill, is on a visit to Leithfield.

Mrs R. D. King, Sefton Street, has returned from a holiday at the river.

Mr and Mrs J. Allport. Blenheim, are staying with Mrs W. Allport, Benvenue Avenue.

Miss Bernadette Mangos, Craigie Avenue, has left on a visit to Wellington. Dr. H. Johnson and Mrs Johnson who have been staying with Mr and Mrs Mcßarron, Wai-iti Road, have left for the North Island. Mrs H. Lance and Miss Mildred Lance, Christchurch, are the guests of Miss Elworthy, “Pareora Cottage,” LeCren’s Terrace.

Mrs A. Wigley, “Opuha Lodge,” Lysaght Street, has returned from a visit to Miss Traill, “Dunstan Downs,” Kurow. Mr and Mrs G. A. Bridges and Mr G. Bridges, Selwyn Street, have returned from a camping holiday at Lake Clearwater. Miss Jane Orford, Geraldine, has left for the north to attend the Girl Guides’ centennial camp at Tauherenikau.

Mr and Mrs F. S. Shrimpton and Miss Peggy Shrimpton, Beverley Road, have returned from a visit to Wellington. Miss Allan, Central Otago is their guest. The engagement is announced between Ruvena, youngest daughter of Mr A. J. Bartlett and the late Mrs Bartlett of Invercargill, formerly of Dunedin, and John Thomas, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. T. Manson, Hunter. The Danish Red Cross has arranged various courses for women, including Red Cross nursing services; air defence; cooking—in which every member has to make all the different dishes, both special diet dishes and simple daily meals; nursing of infants; knitting stockings and cutting and making their own uniforms; making bandages; blood examinations. When applicants have finished the course they are formed into a corps and continue monthly training. Only the air defence course is paid for by the Government, the others being at the expense of the association, which necessarily limits the number of those who can take them.

Prince Baudouin and Princess Josephine Charlotte represented the Belgian Royal Family at the recent celebration in Brussels of King Leopold’s patron saint’s day, states an overseas writer. The children have already acquired a mastery of the Royal technique and betray no nervousness when appearing in public. Their good looks and perfect manners are equally appreciated by the Belgians, with whom all the Belgians enjoy enormous popularity. At the opening of the Leige Exhibition the children were on the stage with their father. The Princess, when the time came for them to take their seats, did so with perfect timing The eight-year-old Prince only displayed a suspicion of nervousness by a sidelong glace at his father to get his cue. Miss Lorna Coote, whose marriage will take place shortly, was the guest of honour at an enjoyable “tea towel” afternoon at the home of Mrs R. W.

Munro, “Dalmore,” Pareora East. The afternoon was spent in games and competitions, the winners being Mesdames C. Beck, L. Neil, and Misses L. Coote and R. Munro. Songs were contributed by Mesdames L. Neil and R. Depree. On behalf of the guests, Mrs H. Depree wished Miss Coote every success in the future and asked her to accept a gift of “tea towels” given by those present. An apology for absence was received from Mrs R. G. Munro. Among those present were: Mesdames R. W. Munro, P. A. Coote, H. Depree, R. Davidson, A. Hoskin, C. Beck, R. Darling, R. Depree and L. Neil and Misses L. Coote, J. Munro, R. Munro, G. Whitticase, I. Hurst and T. Skudder. On Monday evening Miss Mollie Moore and Mrs M. Adams were joint hostesses at a kitchen evening in St. Patrick’s Hall, Browne Street, in honour of Miss Kathleen Moore and Mr W. McConkey, whose wedding will take place on Saturday. The evening was spent in games and dancing. Many useful presents were received for the kitchen and pantry. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs M. Adams, Mr and Mrs A. H. Moore, Mr and Mrs P. H. Bell, Mr and Mrs E. Fairbrother, Mrs McConkey, ’ Mrs Vincent, Mrs Cleaver, Mrs Clark, Mrs Verdon, Mrs Wallis; Misses M. Moore, K. Moore, M. Campbell, B. McConkey, D. Pierce, M. Garriock, V.
