DANGER TO TRAFFIC

Fences And Hedges Lowered Report To Borough Council In a progress report to the Timaru Borough Council last night the Traffic Inspector. Mr C. H. Newcome. said that in six cases comer fences and hedges, where visibility had previously been obstructed, had been lowered or cut down. The intersections where improvements had been effected were as follow:—James and King Streets. Wilson and Cameron Streets, Chapel and Arthur Streets. Avenue and Wai-iti Roads. Edward and Queen Streets, and Babington Street and Craigie Avenue. Mr Newcome mentioned that in two cases the hedges had been cut, but not sufficiently low and in 11 cases occupiers had promised to do the work as soon as possible. In three other cases permission had been given to lower corner fences providing tlie Council did the work under the supervision of the traffic inspector. The meeting was attended by the Mayor. Mr W. G. Tweedy. Crs. P. B. Foote. J. R. Hart. J. s. Satterthwaite, H. J. Mathers. W. H. Hall. F. B. Hawkey. M. H. Richards and A. S. Kinsman. Finance Committee The Finance Committee’s report stated, inter alia:—“The following letter was considered from Mr C. A. King, the caretaker:— *i beg to apply for annual leave as from January 7, 1940. As we have worked a good deal of overtime, this last nine months, we would appreciate an extra week's holiday as compensation. During this period there have been 126 meetings and of these 47 only have been Committee or Council meetings. This not only necessitates extra cleaning, but also late nights and early mornings. Naturally we are beginning to feel the strain. Mr and Mrs Auld have agreed to take over our duties.” It was decided to allow Mr King the extra week’s leave without pay. and. in appreciation of his services the Council agreed to the payment of a bonus of £5. The report was adopted. Reserves Committee The Reserves Committee’s report stated, inter alia:— In regard to the proposal to erect a stone wall at Evans Street, the chairman. Cr Foote, reported that he and the curator. Mr A. W. Andersen, had met the District Railway Engineer and that he had approved the work, and promised some stone as the work proceeded. Caroline Bay. festoon lighting Letter from secretary. Caroline Bay Association, stating that owing to import restrictions it was unable to make the necessary purchases for their own lighting and asking for the loan of the festoons from the Borough Council.—Recommended that the loan of the festoons be made and that any cost be charged to the District Fund Caroline Bay Account. The report was adopted.
