BOROUGH RESERVES

Summer Planting Completed Annuals And Flowers Total 89,405 A report presented by the Curator of Reserves, Mr A. W. Anderson, to the meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night, revealed that 89,405 annuals and other summer flowering plants, including 41.705 at Caroline Bay, had been planted at the various Borough reserves. ‘•The planting of annuals and other summer flowering plants has been completed,” Mr Anderson reported, “and most of the reserves department staff are now occupied in cleaning up in preparation for the holidays and in watering and hoeing flower beds. “The following list shows the number of summer bedding plants raised this season and the reserves in which they were planted:—Caroline Bay 41,705, Gardens 35,550; Alexandra Square 1,750, Ashbury Park 1,000; Maori Park 1,300, West End Park 200, Station Street 820, Virtue Avenue 2,000, Wreck Memorial 200. King Street Res. 1000, Grasmere Street Sub. 1,500, Government Buildings 200 and Nelson Terrace 280; total, 89,405. Display of Roses “The Gardens are looking very well at present,” continued Mr Anderson, “although the lawns are showing signs of drought. The rose garden has been very attractive, and there have been large crowds of visitors to enjoy it. The central part of the glasshouse has been filled with hydrangeas and they have been making a very pleasant show of colour. The first of the begonias are now coming into flower. The cactus house and the fernery have both been kept neat and tidy and each has been quite attractive in its own w’ay. “During the period under review the road at Centennial Park has been resurfaced, most of the thistles have been grubbed out and the old part of the road is in the process of being re-gravelled. No new gravel has been spread, but the existing material has been moved from the side of the road to those parts where it has been most necessary. “Work is proceeding in the various parks and reserves,” concluded Mr Anderson. “The levelling in Ashbury Park is being continued at the same satisfactory pace, and the long grass in Maori Park and Lough Street Reserve has been cut; the trees in the streets have been attendd to, where cultivation, tying, staking or watering were necessary.”
