Sirty Years Ago
“ The Timaru Herald,” December 18, 1879 The Breakwater The work of construction was resumed yesterday at the breakwater, and eleven blocks successfully laid. The diver was sent down to examine the bottom, and reported that it is I very good, with no shingle on it, and that the edge of the shingle is some distance from the end of the work We strust that Messrs Jones and Peters will have a good spell of fine weather so that they may be able to push on the work rapidly. An Opinion on the Weather A correspondent signing himself A Devoted Lover of Old England, writes; , “Land of rain and storm and flood. Land of waler, wind and mud! Where six days a week the gale. Laden thick with rain or hail. First from sou-west blows a piercer. Then veers nor'-west and blows fiercer. Oh! I'm sadly sold in thee. Eden of the Southern Sea. But I have located here. No alternative I fear. But to make the best of thee. Only longing to be tree; Patiently to bear thy clime And anticipate the time When by transportation o'er. I shall seek some genial shore, Never to return to thee, Eden of the Southern Sea.”
