Temuka

(Continued from previous page) The capital value of tlie land then was 196,120 and the unimproved value £31,478. To-day the capital value is £394,910, the unimproved value £111,620 and the improved value £283,290. The increase in population is not great, but that is no index of the town’s prosperity, for it is to be remembered that New* Zealand throughout is a country of small centres all in easy communication with e: ?li other, developing a wst equally, and the larger ceb.tre > serve as the business agencies and depots for all. The increase in capital values is a much more certain indication of a town’s prosperity. Splendid Reserves At present there are the ordinary public services of every modern and progressive town, necessary to the health and convenience of the citizens, but in other respects, and particularly in the matter of recreation grounds, Temuka is also exceptionally well provided for. Its public Domain and reserves are amongst the best in the province of Canterbury, and comprise approximately 180 acres. Made decorative chiefly with English trees, the Domain is encircled with a beautiful avenue, three miles in length. Its entrance is dignified by finely designed gates erected to the memory of the men of the district who fought and died in the South African War. In the centre of the Domain an imposing monument bears the names of those who fell in the Great War. Within the wide extent of the area there are tennis courts, and croquet lawns, a bowling green, golf course, cycle track, hockey and football grounds, and ev/>n public baths, while a grandstand and pavilions ensure the ease and convenience of spectators and players alike. Temuka is also regarded as the anglers’ headquarters, since from here most of the principal fishing rivers in South Canterbury can easily be reached, some of the favourite spots being within a few minutes reach of the town. The Temuka, Te Ngawai, Opihi, Orari, and Waihi rivers encircle the district and among these are the best trout fishing streams in the province.
