THE STAFF OF LIFE A LOCAL FLOUR MILL Ihe "Atlas" l-'lour Milling Company (Evans & Co. Ltd. l was founded by the late William Exans, in 11',;',;’,, and comincmeil operations on January 7, 1889. Messrs. Ueniw Simon Lid., of Manchester, supplied and supervised the erection of the necessary machinery for a Plant lo manufacture fifteen sacks of flour per hour. Like all oilier manufacturing industries it is necessary that a flour mill should be kept up-to-date, and the management placed a Contract in 1921 with Messrs. Thos. Robinson & Son Ltd., Milling Engineers of Rochdale. England dor remodelling the Mill on their latest system. Thouo'b a few of the original machines were renovated and retained, the main portion of the plant was ‘'scrapped" and the existing, and new machines were welded together into a modern unit. Periodically new machines have been installed, particularly a "Simon" Conditioner Brycr in the uhcat cleaning department, with a capacity of 20 quarters ( 160 bushels) of wheat per hour. As “Bread is the Stall of Life" il is vitally important that it should be produced under the most hygienic conditions and not only is the plant entirely automatic from start lo finish —manual labour being only required to shoot the wheal and weigh and sew die finished products in their respective bags—but is considered a model of cleanliness which works without any of the dust usually associated with a I'lour Mill. The “Atlas" brand of flour is well and favourably known throughout the Dominion, and has always maintained its reputation lor high quality, amongst the Company's numerous customers. During the past fifty-one years the Company has manufactured ">25,326 lons Elour, 57,501 tons Bran and 61,607 tons Pollard, using nearly fifteen million bushels of wheal.
