PAMPAS

The temperate grasslands of Argentina are known as the pampas They extend from the Gran Chaco south to the Rio Colorado and from the Andean foothills to the Atlantic coant. Their extent is not exactly defined, but the area is estimated at 200,000 to 300,000 square miles. They support vast numbers of horses, cattle, and sheep, and produce enormous quantities of wheat for export. The high, feathery-topped pampas grass, which totally covers large areas, is the distinctive feature of the vegetation. There are other pampas in South America, but the name by itself indicates the great Argentine region.
