NEW ZEALAND CROSS

The New Zealand Cross, given for valour, is the rarest decoration in the British Empire. It is a very oeautiful cross of silver, with a gold :entre. When it was instituted in 1868 Queen Victoria directed that it should be ranked as of equal merit with the Victoria Cross and next to it in order of precedence. Only 23 awards of the New Zealand Cross were made and all of its holders are now dead. The earliest episodes for which it was given occurred in the Taranaki Wars of 1860-63, and the last occurred in the campaign against Te Kooti in 1870
