December 15 Interviewed in regard to a cabled statement from America that, resumption of the trans-Pacific air service might not be long delayed the Post-master-General (the Hon. F. Jones) said he had no definite information as a likely date of the commencement could not be obtained from the representatives of the Pan-American Company in New Zealand. The Minister announced, however, that the postage rates for letters would be: To New Caledonia 1 - each half-ounce; Hawaii 2 6 each halfounce; United States of America, including internal air transit in the States 4 - each half-ounce; Great Britain and Europe, via United States of America. 6 3 each half-ounce. Postcards will be half the above charges. In view of the possibility that the first mail might be at a short notice. Mr Jones recommends early preparation of postings. All letters on the first flight will be distinctively marked. Letters in other than English should be posted well in advance of the advertised closing time. There is no definite provision for the forwarding of letters to Canton Island, but he Is hopeful that the post office will be able to make a suitable arrangement in regard to this point.
